The Sport of Cutting

Cutting is one of the most exciting and dynamic western equine sports where strategy, horsemanship, and the incredible athletic ability of the cutting horse come together in a thrilling display of teamwork and instinct.

At its heart, cutting is about one horse and rider working together to separate a single cow from the herd and keep it from returning. It’s fast. It’s technical. And it showcases the remarkable talent of a horse trained to read and respond to cattle with lightning-quick agility.

Where the Sport Comes From

Cutting began on working ranches, where horses were trained to help cowboys sort cattle for branding, doctoring, or shipping. Over time, this essential ranch skill evolved into a competitive sport highlighting the precision, intelligence, and quick-thinking of both horse and rider.

Today, cutting is enjoyed by riders of all ages and experience levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals.

How a Cutting Run Works

A competitive cutting run lasts 2 minutes and 30 seconds. During that time, the rider and horse select a cow from the herd and work to hold it away without using the reins for control. Once the cow is separated, the horse takes over anticipating the cow’s moves, stopping hard, turning fast, and mirroring its every step.

A panel of judges scores the run based on:

  • Cow sense and athleticism of the horse

  • Rider’s skill and herd management

  • Difficulty of the cattle chosen

  • Overall effectiveness and teamwork

Every run is different, making cutting a sport filled with strategy, adrenaline, and artistry.

Why Cutting Is So Special

  • The horse is the star. Riders rely on the horse’s instincts and training it’s one of the few sports where the rider “lets go” and the horse takes charge.

  • It’s spectator-friendly. Cutting is easy to understand and thrilling to watch, even for first-timers.

  • It welcomes everyone. Youth, amateurs, non-pros and professionals compete side-by-side in a supportive, encouraging environment.

  • It reflects true western heritage. Cutting is rooted in real ranch work and preserves the traditions that shaped Alberta’s agricultural story.
